We have to separate 3 different types of vacuum tubes as Power Tubes, Preamp Tubes and Rectifier Tubes. There are lot of different tubes used in guitar amplifiers, but most popular power tube types are EL34, 6L6, 6V6, EL84 and KT66, and most popular preamp tubes are 12AX7 (ECC83), 12AT7 (ECC81) and 12AU7 (ECC82).
Can I change the 12AX7 preamp tube to other named preamp tubes?
12AX7 and ECC83 are the same tube types, US makers used the name 12AX7, Eastern European and Russian manufacturers used the name ECC83. There are some other named tubes as like 7025, E83CC, 12AX7A, 12AX7WB and one of newer made Sovtek 12AX7LPS are also compatible with 12AX7 (ECC83) but all of them produce different sound character etc...
